Old Head beach, near Louisburgh, is overlooked by a woodland to the west and Croagh Patrick to the south and east and it sheltered from the south and west.

In wintertime the beach is an ideal location for surfers and windsurfers, here they can catch the best waves in the West.

When the tide goes out, this beach has many rock pools where a number of animal species live.

Old Head Wood is one of the last old native woodlands in Mayo and is a Special Area of Conservation.
