Newport

Newport, Co. Mayo in the West of Ireland

mayo-ireland-newport

Located between the heritage town of Westport and the craggy beauty of Achill Island, Newport is a picturesque port town on the shores of Clew Bay, surrounded by the majestic Nephin Mountains, in an area of unspoiled charm and natural beauty. One of the first features evident on approaching Newport is the elegant and historic seven arch viaduct, tastefully restored in recent years, which carried the Westport-Achill railway line in a former life.

Within easy reach of some of Mayo's most beautiful lakes, mountains and coastline, Newport is a perfect base for a wide range of outdoor pursuits and coastal activities. It is famous for its seatrout and salmon fishing, as well as golf, horse-riding and blue-flag beaches.

Great Western Greenway

Newport is one of the focal points along the route of the new 'Great Western Greenway' - the longest off-road cycling/walking route in the country, which stretches from Wesport to Achill Island.

Festival

The annual Grainne Uaile Festival takes place on the August Bank Holiday weekend in Newport and includes live music on streets, crafts display, barbecue on street, raft race, fancy dress and more.
