Tooreen is a small village, in the parish of Aghamore, located approximately 5 miles from the town of Ballyhaunis. It is a short 10 minutes drive from Ireland West Airport Knock.

The village has a Catholic church, (St Mary's), and St Brigid's National School caters for primary school children in the area.

Tooreen has a vibrant and well-known Hurling Club, formed in 1957, and affiliated to the Mayo County Board. The club won its first Mayo Senior Hurling Championship Title in 1966 and is the holder of numerous county senior titles to date.

Tooreen Dance Hall made national and UK news in the 1950s, with the story of the infamous appearance of a cloven-hoofed 'devil', who was alleged to have danced with a local girl one night in the ballroom. The story certainly earned huge publicity for Tooreen dance hall, which although now closed for many years, was the subject of a docudrama in 2009, “Diabhal ag an Damhsa” (Devil at the Dance Hall).
