Ballycroy Festival in Co. Mayo
The annual Ballycroy Festival takes place every year in Ballycroy at the end of July and beginning of August. The festival is the highlight of the year and an opportunity for locals and visitors to the area to celebrate the wonderful community spirit that is Ballycroy. It coincides with holiday time in other countries, an opportunity for many emigrants to visit their homeland and renew old friendships.
In Ballycroy visitors can enjoy the 'Céad Míle Fáilte' and unique hospitality of the Ballycroy community and participate in the entertainment featured in the programme of festival events. The aims of the annual Festival are two-fold: firstly providing a social occasion where there is something for everyone with entertainment for young and old, local and visitor, and secondly, strengthening the hand of the Community Council in improving the area. An action packed, fun-filled weekend of entertainment, competitions, music and much more is guaranteed.
The hard-working Ballycroy Festival committee organise a variety of events each year, many of which take place in the Community Centre. The centre, established in 1983, is a proud monument to the motivation and vitality of the local community.
The festival programme varies from year to year but some of the main events include a Sports Day, Tug-O-War competitions, Glamorous Granny, Bonny Baby, Dog Show, Fancy Dress, Card Games, Boat Trips to the islands, Live Music & Talent Shows ... as well as a host of other family orientated events. The 2013 festival was a special 'Ballycroy Gathering Festival' and included 30th anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Community Centre.
