Walking in Castlebar in Co. Mayo
Castlebar is an ideal base for walking holidays. Though walking as a leisure pursuit is a relatively new activity in Ireland, Castlebar has been to its fore with it's International Walking Festival held in the first week of July.
This event is one of the premier walking events in Europe attracting over 1200 visitors to the town from all over Europe and indeed from further afield. The Castlebar International 4 Day Walking Festival was first staged in 1967 and has grown in stature since it's inception.
The hinterland of Castlebar offers walkers of all abilities the opportunity to discover the bogs, rivers, mountains and unspoilot beauty of the Mayo countryside, Castlebar tourist walks maps are provided on billboards in prominent positions throughout the town.
There is a sign-posted route around the town called Sli Na Slainte (The Healthy Way) organised jointly by Castlebar Urban Council and The Irish Heart Foundation.
