Griffith's Valuation - Townlands
The Irish Poor Law Act of 1838 stipulated that each union was meant to finance "the relief of the destitute poor" in their own union. This was to be financed by levying rates on the people of the union thus necessitating a system of valuation.
Each holding in the union had to be valued and this massive task was carried out under the direction of Richard Griffith. The findings were published in General Valuation of Rateable Property in Ireland in 1856, this is more commonly known as Griffith's Valuation.
